How many times have you sat down to “quickly make a graphic in Canva” and somehow lost an hour, a snack, and your will to live…
Canva is powerful, but it’s also sneaky. One minute you’re picking a template, and the next you’re adjusting the spacing of a single line of text like it’s a NASA mission.
But here’s the good news:
- You don’t need to be a designer to use Canva efficiently.
- You just need a few simple shortcuts that most creators never learn.
Today, I’m sharing five Canva tricks that genuinely save hours and make your designs look cleaner, sharper, and more consistent.
Let’s jump in.
5 Canva Tips To Make Designing Easier
1. Use Magic Resize to Repurpose Content in Seconds
If you’re creating graphics one-by-one for every platform, stop right now. Canva’s Magic Resize tool lets you instantly turn one design into dozens of correctly sized layouts.
How to Use It:
- Open your design.
- Click Resize in the top-left menu.
- Select all the formats you need (Pinterest, Instagram, YouTube thumbnail, etc.).
- Click Copy & resize.
Done.
Canva handles the dimensions while you adjust minor layout tweaks.
💡 Quick Tip: Revisit all past blog post ‘featured images’ and ‘magic resize’ them into social media images instantly.
Great for:
Creators who post across multiple platforms, printable sellers, bloggers, and course creators.
2. Create a Brand Kit to Keep Everything Consistent
Nothing screams “DIY chaos” like graphics using slightly different shades of purple… on every post.
The Brand Kit feature fixes that.
What You Can Save Inside Your Brand Kit:
- Brand colors (hex codes)
- Brand fonts
- Your logo(s)
- Template styles
Once saved, they’re available with one click in every design.
Why It Saves Time:
No more manually choosing fonts.
No more guessing colors.
No more “which purple did I use last time?”
🎨 Quick Tip: Create 3–5 reusable templates (social posts, Pinterest pins, product covers). Update ONLY the text when creating new content.
3. Use Alignment Tools for Clean, Professional Designs
One of the easiest ways to make your graphics look professional is to align your elements properly. And Canva makes this really simple with its built-in alignment tools and smart guides.
Instead of eyeballing everything, let Canva do the work.
How to Center Elements in Canva
- Select the element (or group of elements).
- Click Position in the top toolbar.
- Under Align to Page, click:
- Center (for horizontal centering)
- Middle (for vertical centering)
You’ll also see pink alignment lines appear as you drag elements – those “snap” lines help you line things up with the center or with other objects.
How to Space Elements Evenly
- Select all the elements you want to tidy (e.g. icons, photos, list items).
- Click Position.
- Use Tidy Up to automatically space them evenly.
This is perfect for:
- Icon rows
- Feature lists
- Product image grids
- Bullet-style layouts
💡 Quick Tip: Once everything’s aligned, use your arrow keys to nudge elements slightly for fine-tuning. Hold Shift while pressing arrows to move elements in bigger steps.
4. Remove Backgrounds in One Click
This tool feels illegal to use.
If you’ve ever downloaded a PNG and then wrestled with removing backgrounds, Canva will become your new best friend.
How to Remove a Background in Seconds:
- Upload your image.
- Click Edit Image.
- Select Background Remover.
- Done!
Perfect for:
- Product images
- Lettering overlays
- Printables
- Thumbnails
- Etsy listing photos
No Photoshop required. No frustration involved.
Note: Background remover is a Pro feature, but worth it if you sell products.
And if you don’t have Canva Pro or Photoshop, you can still remove backgrounds for free by using Photopea. Watch my video in my blog post How to Add a ‘Wow’ Factor to Any Kids Printable (Fast!) to see it in action.
5. Use Layers and Transparency Like a Designer
Most people never use Canva’s layers… and that’s a shame, because it’s the secret to polished, aesthetic designs.
To See Your Layers Panel:
- Click Position in the top bar.
- Click Layers (or use the sidebar in newer versions).
- Rearrange elements like stacking papers.
This makes it easy to:
- Bring text forward
- Send background elements backward
- Fix overlapping shapes
- Create depth and structure
💡 Quick Tip: Lock a layer so it doesn’t shift when you’re moving other layers around.
Using Transparency for Instant Professional Vibes
Highlight an element → click the checkerboard icon → set transparency to 20–60%.
Use transparency for:
- Soft backgrounds
- Highlight strips behind text
- Elegant shadow effects
- Layered elements for depth
💡 Quick Tip: Place a transparent white rectangle behind text to make it readable on busy images, without ruining your design.
My 5-Minute Canva Workflow
When I’m designing something fast – like a social post or product cover, I use this exact 5-minute workflow:
- Start with a saved template
- Swap the text
- Swap the image (if needed)
- Adjust color from Brand Kit
- Export in all formats using Magic Resize
This is how you stay consistent, save time, and never stare at a blank Canva page again.
